Owls Add Five During Early Signing Period

Dec. 20, 2017

Rice head football coach Mike Bloomgren announced Wednesday the signing of five players to National Letters of Intent to join the Owls for the 2018 season.

The five additions signed their letters of intent on the first day of the NCAA's new early signing period for football, which came just two weeks after Bloomgren was named the Owls' head coach.

"It's been an exciting couple of weeks, but today is a great start for us," Bloomgren said. "We feel great about the five young men who signed today and what they will add to our program. I can't wait for our staff to get back on the road as soon as we can to lock down the players who will complete the class."

All five of the players are from the state of Texas and four of the five saw their seasons extended with berths in the state playoffs. Four of the five are defenders, including a pair of cornerbacks.

MILES ADAMS | Houston, TX | 6-4

Compiled 53 tackles (five sacks) for coach Mark Modeste at Strake Jesuit, the same school that produced two-time All-Conference USA linebacker Emmanuel Ellerbee... Led the Crusaders to the second round of the 6A D2 playoffs before falling to eventual state finalist Cy Fair... Top game as a senior came against Cinco Ranch when he was credited with 10 tackles and pair of sacks... Also credited with 21 quarterback hurries, including seven vs. Memorial.

Bloomgren on Adams:"Miles has a very long frame and shows great natural instincts as pass rusher who is also a solid tackler at the point of contact. He is a local kid from Houston which is very important to me."

JA'QUEZ BATTLEY | Fort Worth, TX | 5-10

Credited with 66 tackles in eight games as a senior for coach Phil Young for Arlington Heights as the Yellow Jackets advanced to the 5A D1 state playoffs... Compiled 119 tackles with seven sacks in his two years as a starter.

Bloomgren on Battley: "Ja'Quez demonstrates the physicality we expect in this program. He's a speed to contact type football player who makes big hits and tackles the ball carrier well."

ANDREW BIRD | Fort Worth, TX | 6-1

TAPPS Division 1 All-State selection as a cornerback for coach Aaron Beck at All Saints leading the team to the state semifinals... Credited with 47 tackles, four for a loss, two interceptions, 12 passes broken up and three forced fumbles... Also recorded a safety... Top game of the year was against Houston's St. Pius X when he was credited with 11 tackles and picked off a pass in a 49-37 win.

Bloomgren on Bird: "Andrew has exceptional length and instincts at corner, which will allow him to high point the football and create takeaways. He will excel in Brian Smith's press man coverage schemes and also has the ability to be physical and hit the ball carrier."

CLAY SERVIN | Richardson, TX | 6-4

Two-year starter and 2016 All-District 9-6A selection for coach David Collins at Pearce... Spearheaded the blocking for the Mustangs attack that finished second in the district in rushing and total offense while reaching the second round of the 6A D2 state playoffs.

Bloomgren on Servin: "Clay searches for contact and possesses the physical traits we demand in this program. He has the ability to play either guard or tackle, which gives us great flexibility. With his size he will have the opportunity to compete for a spot immediately this summer."

JASON WHITE | Desoto, TX | 5-8

Three-year starter and four-year letterman for coach Michael Johnson at Bishop Dunne... Second team all-district selection after compiling 33 tackles and a pair of interceptions (one for a touchdown) for the Falcons as a senior... Finished his career with 71 tackles, eight breakups and seven interceptions (three for touchdowns)... Played in three TAPPS D1 championship games, winning the title as a freshman reserve in 2014 and starting in both 2015 & 2016... Named to the Principal's Honor Roll at Dunne... Member of the Sigma Beta and African American Awareness clubs.

Bloomgren on White: "Jason's film is filled with plays that showcase his speed and quickness. He has no problem pressing receivers or making solid tackles in the flats. His passion for the game is evident when you talk to him on the phone and when you watch him play."
