Rice junior linebacker Michael Kutzler is among 12 student-athletes who were recognized by Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky on Wednesday as recipients of the C-USA Fall Spirit of Service award.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award will be presented three times throughout the season, with today's honorees representing Conference USA's fall sports: football, soccer, volleyball and cross country.
A former walk-on, Kutzler will be returning to his hometown of Ft. Worth with his Rice teammates to play in the 10th annual Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl on December 29 against Air Force. He leads the team with five special teams tackles in 2012 and has recorded two sacks as a reserve linebacker.
He was honored for his active work in the community during this past season. In addition to his time spent on the football field, he has participated in the annual International Students Football Clinic, the Challenger Football game, West University Elementary Field Day, Student move-in, Texas Children's Hospital visit, as well as events with Big Brothers and local Cub Scouts. He is a three-time member of the Commissioner's Honor Roll and carries a 3.21 GPA as a Political Science major while also completing his Pre-Med requirements.
