Rice cornerback Bryce Callahan and wide receiver Mario Hull are among 26 freshmen who have been named the 2011 Sporting News Freshman All America Team. Callahan picked up a second honor when he was also named to Scout.com's FoxSportsNext 2011 Freshman All America team.
Callahan, who was named to Phil Steele's All Freshman team on Wednesday, stepped into a starting role after Phillip Gaines was lost for the season at Southern Miss. In Gaines' place against USM, Callahan picked off a pair of passes, setting the stage for an impressive run over the season's final nine games. He picked off passes in three of his last four games, including a pair vs. UTEP. Of the six passes thrown his way in the final three games of the season, he turned four into changes of possession (three interceptions, one completion on a failed fourth-down conversion.
Hull was honored by Sporting News as their 2011 Freshmen All America punt returner. He took over return duties in the fifth week of the season and finished fourth in C-USA and 21st in the nation with a 10.2 yard average on 16 punt returns. In his first game returning punts, Hull tied 59-year old record by returning eight punts.
