Tanner Leland and Paul Porras of Rice are among 11 players who have been named to the 2013 Conference USA All-Academic Team as selected in voting by the league's sports information directors. The all-academic team consists of student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a starter or key reserve on their team.
Leland was honored for the second consecutive year, while this is Porras' first appearance.
The second-leading tackler on the team with 70 stops this season, Porras is the active team leader with 284 career tackles and is two shy from entering the school's career top 10. He carries a 3.39 GPA while majoring in Sport Management and Religious Studies and was previously honored as a member of the CoSIDA Capital One All District VII
A former walk-on from Katy, Leland has compiled a 3.58 GPA as a Mathematical Economic Analysis major. He has started all nine games this season at defensive end. He is fourth on the team with five tackles for loss and has 24 tackles on the season. He began his career at safety making a pair of starts as a sophomore, before moving to defensive end as a junior.
Both players will be back in action on Saturday when the Owls host Marshall in the 2013 Conference USA Football Championship game at Rice Stadium. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. with the game being broadcast nationally on ESPN 2.
