Rice junior linebacker Emmanuel Ellerbee, who led Conference USA in tackles in his first year as a starter, has been honored for his excellence off the field as he was one of 11 players named to the 2016 InTouch Credit Union C-USA Football All-Academic Team, which was announced on Thursday.
A redshirt junior, Ellerbee carries a 3.23 GPA while majoring in Civil Engineering at Rice. Despite missing one game with an injury, he led C-USA and Rice with 118 tackles and 10.7 tackles per game and he stands seventh nationally in tackles per game and is tied for seventh with 70 solo tackles. He finished his junior season with a 14-tackle effort at Stanford, his seventh double-digit tackle game this year and the most double-digit tackle games since Larry Izzo recorded seven in 1995.
Ellerbee’s 118 tackles match Brian Raines’ 2006 mark as the 10th best in school history and his combined 209 tackles with fellow linebacker Alex Lyons are the most for a duo at Rice since Izzo (122) and Jay Lamy (97) combined f or 219 in 1995. He attended Houston’s Strake Jesuit High School before signing with the Owls in 2014. He was a reserve and special teams player for two seasons before taking over as a starter in 2016.
The C-USA All-Academic team is selected in a vote by the football publicists at the member schools and is comprised of student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a starter or key reserve for their team.
