Rice junior defensive end Tanner Leland has been named to the 2012 Conference USA All-Academic Team, as selected by the league's Sports Information Directors.
A former walk-on from Katy, Leland has compiled a 3.65 GPA as a Mathematical Economic Analysis major while earning a scholarship for his accomplishments on the field. He played for two years at safety, making a pair of starts as a sophomore, before moving to defensive end this year. He finished seventh on the team as a sophomore with 43 tackles.
He is a previous member of the C-USA's Commissioner's Honor Roll multiple times and has earned the Commissioner's Academic Medal. The all-academic team consists of student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a starter or key reserve on their team.
Earlier this month, Leland was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Football Team for Region 7.
