Rice junior defensive end Tanner Leland has been named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District team for Region 7, which was selected in voting by college sports information directors.
A former walk-on from Katy, Leland has compiled a 3.65 GPA as a Mathematical Economic Analysis major while earning a scholarship for his accomplishments on the field. He played for two years at safety, making a pair of starts as a sophomore, before moving to defensive end this year. He finished seventh on the team as a sophomore with 43 tackles.
He is a previous member of the C-USA's Commissioner's Honor Roll multiple times and has earned the Commissioner's Academic Medal.
To be eligible for the Capital One Academic All-District Football Teams, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) at his current institution. No student-athlete is eligible until he has completed one full calendar year at his current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
The 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Team will be announced later in November.
