Rice seniors Tanner Leland and Paul Porras, who have anchored the Owls defense through the first nine games of the season have been named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District team for Region 7, in voting by college sports information directors. This is the second honor for Leland and the first for Porras.
The second-leading tackler on the team with 61 stops this season, Porras is the active team leader with 275 career tackles and is 11 away from entering the school’s career top 10. He carries a 3.39 GPA while majoring in Sport Management and Religious Studies.
A former walk-on from Katy, Leland has compiled a 3.58 GPA as a Mathematical Economic Analysis major. He has started all nine games this season at defensive end. He is third on the team with five tackles for loss and has 24 tackles on the season. He began his career at safety making a pair of starts as a sophomore, before moving to defensive end as a junior.
Both players will be placed on the final ballot to determine the 2013 CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America team which will be announced later in November.
To be eligible for the Capital One Academic All-District Football Teams, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) at his current institution. No student-athlete is eligible until he has completed one full calendar year at his current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
