Lloyd, 19, was a defensive back for the Owls who saw action in the season opener against Houston and was also on the travel roster for the first two road games. He became ill after a light workout on Sunday and was taken to Memorial Hermann hospital in the Texas Medical Center where he passed away on Monday morning.
A 2006 graduate of Lamar High School, Lloyd was a resident of Lovett College. He was a two-sport star at Lamar, earning all-district honors in baseball as well as football. He was elected to Who's Who Among American High School Students and volunteered with the Mayor's Youth Council.
"Dale Lloyd loved his Lord, life, his family, and Rice University," head coach Todd Graham said. "His life has taught each of us to renew our faith and to live our lives better every day that we have on this earth. The football team is dedicating the rest of this season to honor Dale and the work ethic and tenacity with which he exemplified on and off the field."
In lieu of flowers, the Lloyd family has requested that memorials be directed to The Dale Lloyd Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship will benefit a future Rice University Student Athlete.
