Rice Announces Improvements to Fan Experience

HOUSTON -- Rice Athletics has made several major improvements to the fan experience at Rice Stadium for the 2016 season as a result of a number of surveys that were sent out over the past year.

"For the last two years, I've read every single response to every survey we have sent to our fans," said Rice Athletics Director of Business Strategy Paul Lockhart-Korris. "I've learned a tremendous amount about Owls fans, what's important to them, and how we can serve them better. Our whole team is excited to release these results, and even more excited to introduce many great improvements based on this fan feedback. We're confident that these changes will help make the 2016 season at Rice Stadium memorable and enjoyable for all of our loyal fans and supporters."

Rice sent three surveys to football fans since the conclusion of the 2015 season: one each in December 2015 to season ticket members and single-game attendees, and one in July 2016 to all Rice fans and alumni interested in stadium modernization plans. In total, fans provided over 1,300 responses, offering invaluable insight about their priorities, satisfaction and desires.

Some key takeaways included:

• Fans agree that Rice Football is a great value -- ticket price and parking rated first and second for satisfaction among both season ticket members and single-game fans.
• Restrooms are the most important element of the fan experience, and also the one with the lowest satisfaction.
• Concessions were unsatisfactory -- fans rated concessions as the second most important aspect, but just around average in terms of satisfaction.
• In-game entertainment was below average due to an outdated sound system and no video board.
• Customer service excelled across the board -- parking attendants, event staff (ticket takers, ushers, custodians, etc.), and employees at concession stands and the team store all earned high marks for their friendliness, helpfulness, and knowledge of the game and stadium.

This helpful and informative feedback -- in addition to existing plans -- has enabled Rice Athletics to implement game-changing improvements to the fan experience, including:

• A brand new, state-of-the-art video board and sound system
• A new concessions partner with expanded selection, improved quality, and increased points of sale
• Open alcohol sales and consumption throughout the stadium, featuring local craft beers
• A permanent team store with greatly expanded selection, above the south end zone

Other small improvements, including west side bathroom upgrades, have been implemented and plans are underway to address other areas identified as needing improvement.
