Sophomore Bio Bilaye-Benibo (Corpus Christi/Calallen) and freshman Jarett Dillard (San Antonio/Sam Houston) made big plays, but the defense may have been the star of Saturday morning's scrimmage on the grass practice field.
Benibo gained 37 yards on just four carries, including one 12-yard gain when he single-handedly pushed the pile an extra five yards. He also scored twice in the goalline portion of the scrimmage.
"That was as good of a second-effort run as I have seen," said head coach Ken Hatfield. "But on the next play, he got stripped of the ball."
The turnovers forced by the defense was a bright spot for Hatfield. In addition to Lance Luedeker's (Waco/China Springs) recovery of that Benibo fumble, Chad Price (Bay City/High) intercepted a pass at the goalline and Dietrich Davis (Brackettville/Brackett) recovered a bad snap from center in the end zone for a defensive touchdown.
"We got more turnovers today, and that's good. We were around the ball and hitting folks," added Hatfield.
Dillard had a 13-yard touchdown reception from Chase Clement (San Antonio/Alamo Heights) on the scrimmage's first drive, then later caught a three-yard TD pass in the goalline session.
