Rice senior center Nate Richards has been added to the watch list for a pair of national awards prior to the start of the Owls’ 2013 season.
Richards was added to the watch lists for both the Rimington and the Rotary Lombardi awards. The Rimington Award is named for legendary Nebraska center Dave Rimington and honors the top center in college football. The Rotary Lombardi Award, which is presented annually in Houston, honors the top lineman on either offense or defense.
Richards was named by Conference USA Coaches to their preseason all-conference team after starting all 13 games for the Owls in 2012. He only missed one snap during the season, having to leave field by rule for one play late in the Marshall game when his helmet came off his head. He joined the Owls after earning Junior College All-America honors at Trinity Valley JC. In addition to his success on the field, Richards was named to the 2013 C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
The Owls open the season on Saturday, August 31 when they meet Texas A&M in College Station. Kickoff is set for noon with national coverage provided by ESPN.
