By Chuck Pool (firstname.lastname@example.org) - Rice senior linebacker Alex Lyons, who has led the Owls in tackles in each of the last two seasons, has been named to the 2016 preseason Coaches All-Conference USA team which was released on Wednesday by the league.
Lyons comes into his senior season with 198 career tackles and is entering his third year as a starter. He has made 25 consecutive starts for the Owls and led the team with a career-high 77 as a junior. He has been named to Athlon’s preseason All-CUSA second team and was tabbed by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football as the 12th most important college player in Texas in 2016 as well as earning a spot on their All-Texas College preseason team for 2016.
In addition to his career best in tackles, he set career highs with 5.5 tackles for loss and four pass breakups while earning second-team, All-Conference USA by Phil Steele and honorable mention by league coaches. His top game in 2015 was a 10-tackle effort vs. Army (tied career high), including three consecutive stops to force Army to kick a game-tying field goal win 2:13 left.
Lyons is also a four-time member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Lyons and senior wide receiver Zach Wright will join with Rice head coach David Bailiff on Monday in Dallas to participate in the annual Conference USA Media Days. The Owls open their 2016 training camp on Thursday, August 4 in advance of their season opener on September 1 when hit the road to face defending C-USA Champion Western Kentucky at 7 p.m.
