Rice IMG Sports Marketing, the multimedia rights partner for Rice Athletics and an IMG College property, and GOW Communications today announced that 1560 The Game (KGOW) in Houston will become the home for Rice Owls' football and men's basketball radio broadcasts for the next four seasons.
The agreement will make Houston's only locally-owned, independent sports station the radio flagship for Rice Athletics for live programming as well as on-air and on-site promotional initiatives.
In addition to being the home of live Rice broadcasts for the next four years, 1560 The Game will also host a weekly one-hour show on Mondays from 7-8 p.m. that will focus on Rice Athletics. The show will kick off with the start of football season and run through the baseball season. Due to existing contractual obligations with the network, a number of 2011 Owls football games will shift to KCOH (1430 am) to ensure all games are broadcast.
"We are thrilled to have 1560 The Game as our broadcasting home for the next four years," Rice Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan said. "They are committed to local programming, and we're excited to become the centerpiece of their live local sports lineup. They have established themselves as an aggressive force in this market, and we look forward to leveraging their promotional energy both over-the-air and at our venues to spread the word about the great work of our dedicated student-athletes here at Rice."
"Rice University has been the pride of Houston for over a century, and 1560 The Game embodies their `Can Do' spirit and commitment to excellence," said Neal Talmadge, VP/General Manager of KGOW. "We're honored to be associated with the Owls."
1560's Program Director, Craig Larson also noted "Our powerful 50,000-watt signal will provide Rice fans across the Houston Metro area with the best coverage possible."
"KCOH is proud to be part of the Rice broadcasting team," KCOH Sports Director Ralph Cooper said. "KCOH and Rice have been pillars of the Houston community. We look forward to continued greatness in this union. It is our pleasure to be in a position to be part of a great season of athletics at Rice."
Rice will open its 100th season of college football on September 3 when the Owls travel to Austin to face the Texas Longhorns. The home schedule kicks off the following week when Rice hosts Purdue at 2:30 p.m. in a game that will be televised nationally by CBS Sports Network.
About Gow Communications
Gow Communications, LLC was formed when a group of 30 Houston investors acquired the license to launch KGOW 1560 The Game in 2007. They have since acquired Mission Media Group, who distributes content under the Sporting News Radio name that reaches more than three million people each week on a network of 175 terrestrial stations, Sirius Satellite Radio, and a number of digital and mobile partners. These investors are committed to something unique: a locally-owned, locally-managed station in an era where most major radio stations have been bought by large conglomerates.
