Bayou Bucket to Continue in 2013
Switch to nonconference status completed
April 20, 2012
Rice University and the University of Houston have announced that the Bayou Bucket series presented by State Farm will continue through the 2013 campaign.
Both games will be played at Reliant Stadium, including the 2012 contest, which will be televised nationally on Fox Sports Network (FSN) on Sept. 29. A game time for that Sept. 29 contest has yet to be determined and a date for the 2013 game has not been set.
"It has always been our goal to do everything that we can to maintain the Bayou Bucket series," Rice Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan said. "It's obvious how much this game means to the players on both teams and we need to continue to make sure that future generations of Owls and Cougars will have the same opportunity to win the Bucket."
"We are excited this series will continue for the next two years and appreciate the efforts of everyone involved," Houston Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades said. "The Houston-Rice game is meaningful for our city, campuses and alumni, and we are pleased our football student-athletes will be able to enjoy this great intra-city rivalry."
One of the country's more unique rivalries, the Bayou Bucket pits two major universities from the same city in an annual football clash, joining only the UCLA-USC series. Houston currently leads the all-time ledger 27-11, but the series has been much closer over the past 16 contests, with Houston holding a 9-7 lead. Rice won the only previous meeting at Reliant Stadium, 10-7 to open the 2004 season.
Houston and Rice have failed to meet on the football field just three times since 1971 (1996-98) when the Bucket series was interrupted by the demise of the Southwest Conference. The two schools resumed the rivalry in 1999 as a nonconference game but returned to conference action in 2006 when Rice joined Conference USA.
UH will join the BIG EAST Conference on July 1, 2013 and had an existing open date on its 2013 nonconference schedule which will be filled by the game with Rice. The Owls will move their previously-announced 2013 game with Louisiana Tech to a future date to be determined.
