Rice head football coach David Bailiff has announced the lineup of guest coaches who will handle the play calling chores during the first half of Friday night's Blue-Gray Spring Game which kicks off at 7 p.m. at Rice Stadium. Admission to the game is free.
This year's lineup includes Rice Director of Athletics Joe Karlgaard, Houston Astros President Reid Ryan, noted surgeon Dr. Wayne Yakes, Rice professor Dr. Rick Schell, former Rice offensive line standout Jeremy Thigpen, Katherine Whaley and Chita Johnson from KHOU-TV, Courtney Gillmore from KPRC-TV and Samica Knight from KTRK-TV.
Since 2008, Bailiff has annually reached out to notable figures from Rice and the Houston area to join the Owls during the finale of spring drills. The coaches will be divided into two groups, with one coaching the Rice offense and the other the defense in the first quarter, then switching those assignments in the second quarter.
"This is a unique way to get people involved in our program and it's always fun to hear the reaction of people when we offer them the chance to come down and put on a headset," Bailiff said. "They almost always are pretty nervous before we start, but they get the hang of it pretty quickly and have a great time."
