April 5, 2012

The Rice Owls will help usher in the start 2012 college football season when the face the UCLA Bruins on Thursday, August 30 at Rice Stadium. The game had originally been scheduled for Saturday, September 1.

The game date has been moved up two days to accommodate a request from one of Conference USA's television partners and kickoff time will be released at a later date.

"We were happy to accommodate the request to move of the date of the game since this allows football fans and our students to celebrate the start of the college football season at Rice Stadium. It's a tremendous jump start to the Labor Day weekend and accommodates any fans who have other plans or are planning to head out of town for the weekend," Rice Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan said. "We are working on some exciting changes and revisions our game day experience and will be looking to unveil these changes as part of a promotional effort for this game."

The move to Thursday night will mark the second time in the last four years the Owls not opened their season on a Saturday. Rice and SMU kicked off the 2008 season with a Friday night contest at Rice Stadium.
