HOUSTON — The Rice football team completed its first scrimmage of spring camp Friday afternoon.

Three quarterbacks led the offense on eight scoring drives, with Tyler Stehling and J.T. Granato contributing five touchdowns, while the rushing attack added a score of its own.

Stehling had two touchdowns, an eight-yarder to Darrion Pollard and a 33-yard strike to Zach Wright. Granato added three touchdowns, a 17-yarder to Austin Walter, a 37-yarder to Nahshon Ellerbe and a 60-yard strike to Temi Alaka.

Jowan Davis found the end zone on a four-yard run and Anthony Price (41 yards) and Hayden Tobola (26 yards) each converted on field goal attempts.

Defensively, Zach Abercrumbia had two sacks and Joshua Cummings recorded an interception.

“We actually got in 94 plays today,” said Rice head coach David Bailiff. “I was really pleased with the tempo. I was pleased with the effort. I thought we had some big plays on both sides of the ball. Tyler Stehling really got us going early with that first drive. I thought our running backs really did well today. Jowan Davis showed what he had early in the season last year. We caught the ball well. We had too many penalties. We had three holding penalties and we have to eliminate those. You just keep coming back to when you know a scrimmage is going well (with) the sounds of the pads. It was physical and a hard-hitting day.”

The team will take tomorrow off before returning to the practice field on Monday.
