Former Rice running back Sam McGuffie will be a member of one of two entries who will represent the United States in the four-person bobsled event at the 2016 BMW IBSF World Championships in Igls, Austria.
McGuffie will join 2010 Olympic Champion Steve Holcomb, Carlo Valdes, Frank Del Duca on Night Train 2 when competition gets underway on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. (Houston time) with two runs and concludes with two additional runs on Sunday starting at 8:00 a.m. Races are scheduled to broadcast on Universal HD. First runs will also be streamed live on the Bobsleigh and Skeleton TV Youtube Channel , and the second run can be viewed live on NBC Sports Live Extra.
McGuffie and Holcomb began their World Championship competition last Sunday by finishing seventh in the team event, which is based on the total combined time of runs are taken by four different disciplines: women's skeleton, men's skeleton, women's bobsled and men's two-man bobsled.
This is McGuffie’s first year of as a member of the US Team. His top result during the World Cup schedule was a seventh place finish in the four-person event at the stop in Park City, Utah on January 17.
After transferring to Rice after one year at the University of Michigan, McGuffie was a standout in both football and track at Rice. He had a combined 2,299 all-purpose yards at Rice, rushing for 1,057 yards with seven touchdowns and catching 102 passes for 1,059 and nine touchdowns. He ranks 11th in school history with his 102 receptions.
On the track, he finished second in the long jump at the 2009 Conference USA Outdoor with a jump of 24-8.25 and he finished third in the Heptathlon at the 2012 C-USA Indoor.
