When the Seattle Seahawks visited the Rice campus late in September to hold a walkthrough prior to playing the Houston Texans the following day, Rice head football coach David Bailiff was there to meet the team and present former tight end Luke Willson with his Armed Forces Bowl ring.
On Sunday night, Willson earned an even more selective piece of hardware.
Willson caught a pair of passes for 17 yards in Seattle's dominating 43-8 defeat of Denver at Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Sunday. He was the seventh Owl to play in the Super Bowl and the sixth to earn a ring by playing for the Super Bowl champion. He is the first rookie Owl to play for a Super Bowl winner since Earl Cooper.
He became the second Rice Owl to catch a pass in a Super Bowl, joining Cooper who caught the first of Joe Montana's Super Bowl record 11 touchdown passes in Super Bowl XVI vs. Cincinnati. His 17 yards were the most for an Owl, surpassing Cooper's 15 yards on a pair of catches.
