Ashfield will coach the Owls’ offensive line while Picazo will handle the quarterbacks. Both worked with Bloomgren on the offensive staff at Stanford for the previous five years.
“Joe and Robbie are outstanding coaching talents who I watched develop over the past five years. Each is well-versed in the concepts that we are going to implement at Rice. They have hit the ground running and have been tremendous assets in our recruiting efforts this winter.”
Prior to joining the Cardinal in 2013, Ashfield served as the offensive coordinator at New Mexico Military Institute for two years and coached receivers at Loras College (Iowa) from 2008-10.
A quarterback at St. John’s (Minn.) under legendary coach John Gagliardi, Ashfield played professionally for one year in the German Football League (2001) before beginning his coaching career in New Zealand with the North Harbour Pride in Auckland from 2001-2004. He served as the head coach of the New Zealand National Team in 2004.
He returned to the United States in 2005, earning a master’s degree from Delta State and worked as an offensive assistant at Stanford from 2005 and as a graduate assistant in 2006.
Picazo played quarterback at Stanford from 2009-12. He joined the Cardinal staff as an offensive assistant in 2014 after working as a student assistant in 2013. He earned both his undergraduate and master’s degrees at Stanford and was a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award recipient in high school.
