New Rice head coach Mike Bloomgren will have to wait nearly a month before he makes his Conference USA debut when he leads the Owls to Hattiesburg, Mississippi on September 22 to open Rice's 14th season of C-USA football, an eight-game slate that will feature home games with UTSA, UTEP, UAB and Old Dominion.
The opener against USM will mark the Owls latest C-USA opener since 2013, as Rice opens the season by hosting Prairie View (August 25), Houston (September 1) and traveling to Hawai'i (September 8) and then has a bye week before openening conference action.
After a third consecutive road assignment on September 29 at Wake Forest, Rice opens its 2018 C-USA home schedule with back-to-back games against UTSA (October 6) and UAB (October 13). The Owls home schedule also includes a date with UTEP on November 3 and concludes with a visit by Old Dominion on November 24.
In addition to the opener against Southern Miss, the Owls have road contests at FIU (October 20), North Texas (October 27) and Louisiana Tech (November 10) and wrap up their road schedule with a non-conference matchup with LSU on November 17.
Conference USA's 2018 slate will see each school will play every team in its division once for six games, while playing two cross-over opponents from the opposite division. Each team will reverse the location of its 2017 opponents, both inter-division opponents and intra-division foes. The conference is in the second year of a rotation between cross-division opponents that will rotate every two years until 2024, when each school has played every opponent in the opposite division once home and away.
The 2018 schedule complies with C-USA scheduling policies as approved by the Board of Directors. In addition, the schedule provides the following:
- All teams finish their Conference schedule with two games of one at home and one away.
- Nearly all teams have two home games and two away games in the first half of the Conference schedule as well as the second half of the Conference schedule; and
- At least one conference game in all but the opening weekend of the season.
A schedule of televised games will be released at a later date. Conference USA's 14th annual Championship Game, pitting the champions of the East and West Divisions, is scheduled for Saturday, December 1.
With the completion of the conference schedule, Rice will soon launch its 2018 season ticket renewal campaign, with new season ticket sales slated to go on sale later in the spring. Anyone with season ticket questions should email email@example.com.
