Stanford, Calif. -- Jowan Davis scored twice but it was not enough as Rice dropped its season finale at 24th-ranked Stanford, 41-17.
Davis rushed 10 times for 49 yards. The senior closed his career with 2,028 rushing yards, moving into a tie for eighth-place on the school's career rushing record.
Keller Chryst rushed for a 62-yard touchdown on Stanford's third play of the game. The Cardinal then drove into the red zone its next two possessions. But the Owls stopped them both times to force field goals.
After a Stanford touchdown pushed the lead to 20-0, the Owls got on the board, driving 63 yards in a season-long 19 plays and finishing when Davis scored on fourth down from two yards out just before the half. However, Rice was called for holding and was forced to settle for a field goal.
Rice was outgained 534-to-291 despite running 26 more plays.
The Cardinal opened the second half with a Christian McCaffery touchdown. Rice answered right back, driving 75 yards in 13 plays, capped off by a six-yard run by Davis. But, Stanford added two touchdowns late in the third quarter to put the game away.
The Owls close the season with a 3-9 record.
