BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Luke Turner ran virtually untouched from one yard out to give Rice University football a 37-34 overtime win at UAB on Thursday night at Legion Field. The Owls piled up 328 yards on the ground but needed one extra drive to earn the team's eighth win of the season against the Blazers.
Charles Ross got the offense rolling in the first half, but left the game with an apparent injury after tallying 50 yards on 10 carries. Freshman Jowan Davis took over with the bulk of the carries in the second half and overtime and piled up a season-high 130 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.
Rice chose to play defense first in overtime after winning the coin toss. The Owls' defense then sacked UAB's Jonathan Perry on first and third down, setting up the Blazers' go-ahead 43-yard field goal.
The Owls then took over and moved the ball quickly. Taylor McHargue completed a seven-yard pass to Connor Cella on the first play, then Davis pushed the pile 17 yards down to the 1-yard line. Following a penalty, Turner kept the ball on an option run into the end zone to send the Owls home with a win.
The Owls (8-3, 6-1 C-USA) opened the game with a score as Chris Boswell put Rice on the board with a 47-yard field goal on the opening drive.
Rice tacked onto its lead late in the first quarter after stopping the Blazers on fourth and short near midfield. Ross punctuated the 48-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown run.
UAB (2-9, 1-6) took advantage of a miscue in the second quarter, returning a fumble to the one-yard line before punching it in on the next play to pull within 10-7.
Rice regained a double-figure cushion late in the half when McHargue took the Owls into the red zone on a 44-yard run and then found Jordan Taylor open for a 12-yard reception to give Rice a 17-7 lead at the break.
UAB mounted its first real threat of the game early in the third quarter when the Blazers pulled within three on its opening possession of the second half and then took their first lead of the game later in the quarter, 21-17.
Rice responded to take a 24-21 lead as Jeremy Eddington caught his first two passes of the season, including an 18-yard scoring pass, the first of his career.
Davis then gave Rice a 10-point cushion as he rushed 54 yards on a 70-yard drive, including a two-yard touchdown run. That score put the Owls ahead, 31-21, with 7:20 to play.
UAB would not go quietly, scoring a touchdown with 3:37 left to pull within three points. The Blazers then forced and recovered a fumble in Rice territory on the following possession, setting the home team up for a tying 24-yard field goal to send the teams to an extra period.
The Owls racked up 326 rushing yards and out-gained UAB, 467-to-333, on the night.
Rice closes out the regular season on Nov. 30 at home against Tulane.
