EL PASO – Jay Mattox’s 24-yard field goal with 48 seconds left capped off a 16 play, 7:25 drive and Driphus Jackson’s Hail Mary fell incomplete as Rice dropped its second straight Conference USA game, 24-21, Friday night.
Prior to the drive, Rice drove 53 yards in 10 plays. But, Hayden Tobola’s 38-yard field goal was blocked, setting up UTEP for the win.
Jackson was 14-of-26 for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Zach Wright caught six passes for a career-high 116 yards, his first career 100 yard receiving game. He also had a season-high 36-yard touchdown reception.
The Owls, who came into the game second in the nation in time of possession at 34:09, held the ball for just 26:36.
Rice returns home next Saturday, Nov. 14, when it hosts Southern Miss at 2:30 p.m.
