UAB scored on its first four possessions, as Rice could not get anything going early. Austin Walter got the Owls on the board with a 70-yard touchdown run, his second 70-yard touchdown of the year. However, after recovering an onside kick, Miklo Smalls, who replaced Sam Glaesmann at quarterback, threw an interception on the first play of the drive that Brandon Harris returned for a touchdown.
Smalls got things going in the second half, scoring his first career touchdown before connecting with Aaron Cephus for a nine-yard touchdown.
Smalls finished the day 14-of-22 for 227 yards and a touchdown while rushing 10 times for 99 yards and a score. Cephus hauled in four passes for 100 yards, his second career 100-yard game.
