General Notes

  • Memphis won the toss and deferred to the second half. Rice received, and defended the north goal.

  • Rice is 2-1 when scoring first.

  • The Owls had their lowest number of penalties (4) and penalty yards (25) of the season, and lowest dating back to the 2010 Tulsa game (Nov. 6).

  • Rice's 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter marked the second time the Owls had a lead at the end of the first quarter this season.

  • Tanner Leland made a tackle on the first play of his first career start. Andrew Gautreaux also made his first start of the season at wide receiver

    Offense

  • Rice has scored at least 24 points in each of the last four games, and eight of the last nine games dating back to last season.

  • Rice was 3-of-3 for chances inside the red-zone. This year the Owls are 14-16 in total red-zone chances.

  • Turner Peterson's two touchdowns moved him into a tie for second place place on the team in scoring this season with Vance McDonald (18 points).

  • Tyler Smith finished with 97 yards rushing, his most since 113 yards on 21 carries at Houston on Nov. 28, 2009. Smith had 67 yards in the 2011 season-opener at Texas and 92 at North Texas in 2010. His 31-yard run in the first quarter was his longest since a 48-yd rush at North Texas.

  • Taylor McHargue completed 15 passes for 170 yards to seven different receivers.

  • Rice posted its second and third-longest plays of the season in the victory (51 and 47 yards)...
    * The 51-yard reception for Turner Peterson in the second half is a career-long.
    * Jared Williams' 47-yard interception return for a touchdown were both the respective firsts of his career. The Owls also had explosive 41-yard and 35-yd kickoff returns by Jeremy Eddington.
     

     

    Defense
  • Rice did not allow a touchdown in a game since a 38-0 victory to open the 1995 season against UNLV.

  • Scott Solomon's tackle for loss in the first half was the 36th of his career, tying him with Matt Sign for fourth on the Owls' all time list. He later registered a quarterback sack to pass sign and now has 19.5 sacks, a half shy of Ndudwe Kaul (1993-96) for second on the Rice all-time list. He is now one tackle for loss shy of John Syptak (2002-05) who had 38 during his career.

  • Turner Peterson's two touchdowns moved him into a tie for second place place on the team in scoring this season with Vance McDonald (18 points).

  • Jared Williams' 47-yard interception return for a touchdown was the first Rice interception returned for a TD since 2008.

  • After one sack in the last two games, the Owl defense tallied four against the Tigers. Rice also had four sack in the home-opening win over Purdue.

    Special Teams

  • Kyle Martens placed three punts inside the 20, including two where the ball went out of bounds inside the 10. He nailed a 61-yard punt late in the second quarter (season-long was 65).

  • Mario Hull had eight punt returns for 121 yards, including a 28-yard return for the Owl. His eight returns tied a school record established by Horton Nesrta at UCLA (Oct. 11, 1952).
