EL PASO, Texas -- Rice scored the first 17 points of the game and never looked back, defeating UTEP, 31-14, in both teams Conference USA opener.
With the win, Rice improves to 1-1 on the year and 1-0 in C-USA.
The Owls outgained UTEP, 437-to-229. Rice also rushed for 306 yards while holding the Miners to just 26 rushing yards, its fewest rushing yards allowed since holding North Texas to 26 in 2014.
On its opening possession, Rice used a 10-play, 56 yard drive before Will Harrison nailed a 36-yard field goal.
In the second, Sam Glaesmann scored on a five-yard run. Rice increased its lead to 17-0 when Glaesmann hit Aaron Cephus for a 52-yard touchdown in the third quarter. UTEP never got closer than 10 points.
Samuel Stewart rushed 16 times for 89 yards and caught three passes for 42 yards.
