Sam Bennett was a graduate assistant for the Owls for two seasons (2014-15). Bennett joined the Owls after working in private business for one year. He coached football, basketball and track at Scoggins Middle School in Frisco for one year after graduating from Texas Tech in December of 2010.

The son of former SMU head coach and current Baylor defensive coordinator Phil Bennett, Sam Bennett was a two-year letterman at SMU as a deep snapper, earning All C-USA Freshman honors in 2006.

He graduated from Highland Park High School where he was a starter on the Scots' 15-0 state championship squad. He played on the offensive line, blocking for future Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford as well as handling the deep snapping chores.
