Comeback Comes up Short as Rice Drops Regular Season Finale to Old Dominion, 74-67
Rice cut a 17-point second half deficit to three-points, but two turnovers in the final minute and a half proved costly as the Owls fell, 74-67 on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.


HOUSTON — Rice opens the Conference USA season this Saturday, Dec. 31, when it travels to Norfolk, Va., to face Old Dominion. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. CT and will be live-streamed on CUSA.tv.

Scouting Rice
• Rice enters Saturday afternoon’s game with a 10-3 record. The Owls have won two straight games and four of their last five after defeating St. Thomas, 83-63, on Dec. 21.
• Redshirt junior guard/forward Egor Koulechov is averaging 18.5 points, good for fourth-place in C-USA. He leads the NCAA (as of Dec. 29) in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 60.0% from beyond the arc. The Volgograd, Russia native is also fourth in three-point field goals made (2.5) and seventh in both rebounding (7.2) and field goal percentage (.543).
• Sophomore guard Marcus Evans is seventh in the conference in scoring, averaging 17.9 points per game. He is also fifth in the league in assists (5.2).
• Redshirt junior guard Marcus Jackson is averaging 13.7 points, 3.2 assists and 3.0 rebounds. He is fourth in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2) and ninth in free throw percentage (.818).
• Sophomore guard Connor Cashaw is averaging 8.5 points and is second on the team with 5.2 rebounds.
• The Owls are second in Conference USA in scoring, averaging 85.0 points per game while allowing 74.7.
• Rice leads the league in field goal percentage (49.4%) and three-point field goal percentage (39.9%) while allowing 42.9% from the floor and 33.7% from three.
• The Owls are also second in the league with 9.5 three-pointers made per game.
• Head coach Mike Rhoades is in his third season at the helm of the Rice basketball program. He owns a 34-43 (.442) record on South Main and a 231-119 (.660) record in 12 years as a head coach.

Scouting Old Dominion
• Old Dominion enters Saturday afternoon’s contest with a 7-5 record. The Monarchs are coming off a 65-54 loss against William & Mary Thursday night.
• Junior forward leads the team in scoring, averaging 11.8 points per game. He is third in Conference USA in blocks (1.9) and sixth in rebounding (8.2).
• Sophomore guard Ahmad Caver is second on the team in scoring with 11.3 points. He is third in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.4) and seventh in assists (4.3).
• ODU is scoring just 59.2 points per game while allowing a league-low 57.1.
• The Monarchs are connecting on just 36.1% from the field and 28.4% from three. However, they are allowing a league-best 39.2% from the floor and just 33.2 from beyond the arc.
• ODU is outrebounding its opponents by 5.8 rebounds a game, 40.5-to-34.7.
• Head coach Jeff Jones is in his fourth season at the helm of the Old Dominion men’s basketball program where he owns a 77-44 (.636) record. In 24 seasons as a head coach, Jones is 434-331 (.567).

Series History
• Rice and Old Dominion will meet for the seventh time.
• ODU holds a 5-1 record in the series and is 3-1 in games played in Norfolk.
• Last year, Rice split the season series, defeating the Monarchs, 75-66 in Norfolk before falling 74-67 in Houston.
• Head coach Mike Rhoades is 1-3 against Old Dominion.

• Rice closes its road trip next Monday, Jan. 2, when it travels to Charlotte, N.C., to face Charlotte. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT and will be live-streamed on ESPN3.
