AUSTIN, Texas - Rice University men's basketball returns to action following the holidays on Saturday at Texas. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center and the game will be televised nationally on the Longhorn Network. The Owls (3-8) recently concluded a five-game homestand from Dec. 1-22. Rice was 2-3 over the stretch, including wins against Houston Baptist and Chicago State.
In their last outing, the Owls nearly erased an 18-point second-half deficit before falling, 65-63, to new Big 12 member TCU.
Owls Fall in Austin, 73-59
Rice had a two-game winning streak snapped New Year's Eve, as Texas defeated the Owls 73-59.
Tamir Jackson racked up 25 points in the game and moved into second on the league scoring list with 18.0 points per game. He trails only Tulane's Josh Davis, who averages 18.4 ppg. Jackson's supporting cast was also strong against the Horned Frogs, as Julian DeBose added 12 points and Seth Gearhart scored 11.
Saturday's game opens a two-game road trip for Rice before Conference USA play opens. The Owls travel to Harvard on Jan. 5.
Scouting the Longhorns
Texas fell, 67-56, at Michigan State on Dec. 22 to move to 7-5 on the year. The Longhorns are 6-0 at home after topping North Carolina, 85-67, on Dec. 19.
Sheldon McClellan leads the team in scoring with 15.7 points per game. Julien Lewis also averages double figures with 12.0 points per game and shoots better than 40 percent from downtown. Jonathan Holmes is UT's top rebounder with 7.8 boards per game to accompany 7.3 points.
Texas holds its opponents to 33.8 shooting from the field and just a 23.0 percent mark from three-point range. The Longhorns average 64.5 points per game, compared to 59.7 for their opponents. The team turns the ball over 17.4 times per game.
Texas holds a 134-58 advantage in the series, spanning from 1915 to 2011. The Owls have lost seven-straight games against UT, dating back to 1996. Texas has been ranked in the AP poll five times during the streak, including four times in the top 10.
Jackson has faced the Longhorns three times, averaging 13.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game, including 19 points a year ago.
DeBose and Gearhart each played against Texas last season. DeBose scored four points and notched a rebound in the 73-59 setback.
Rice shot just 31 percent in the game but forced 18 turnovers. Texas' J'Covan Brown led all scorers with 23 points.
Including Rice's setback against TCU last Saturday, the Big 12 is 4-3 against Conference USA this season.
