HOUSTON, Texas—Egor Koulechov and Marcus Evans each earned honors for their performances last week in leading Rice to victories over St. Thomas and New Mexico.
Koulechov was named College Sports Madness Conference USA Player of the Week and Evans was named C-USA Freshman of the Week by the conference office.
Koulechov averaged 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks. The sophomore opened the week by scoring eight points in a 67-54 victory over St. Thomas. He grabbed five rebounds and recorded three assists, two blocks and two steals.
He followed that up by scoring a career-high 32 points, including 24 in the second half, in rallying the Owls’ to a 17-point second half comeback in a 90-89 victory at New Mexico. The Valgograd, Russia native connected on 10-of-16 from the field, a career-high six three-pointers and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. He had five rebounds, a career-high four assists, two steals and a block. The sophomore hit four three-pointers in the second half, including the game-tying three with 21 second left. He then made the game-winning free throw with 0.1 seconds to play.
Koulechov is averaging 19.0 points per game, the second most in Conference USA.
Evans followed that with 21 points in in rallying the Owls’ to a 17-point second half comeback in a 90-89 victory at New Mexico. It was his fourth straight 20-point game and sixth of the season. He grabbed a career-high eight rebounds with four assists and two steals. With the Owls trailing 80-65 with six minutes to play, the freshman scored five of 10 points to help get Rice to within six points. Three minutes later he scored on a fast break dunk to get Rice within two points.
This is Evans’ third Freshman of the Week honor. He is the leading scorer in the Conference USA as well as the leading freshman scorer in the country. He is also tied for the conference lead in steals.
