HOUSTON, Texas—Marcus Evans was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week in a vote by the media, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Evans helped lead Rice to a 1-1 record on the week. He averaged 25.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.5 steals. He shot 50.0% (15-of-30) from the field, 40.0% (4-of-10) from three and 72.7% (16-of-22) from the charity stripe.
Evans began the week by scoring a career-high 28 points at Houston Baptist. He also recorded career-highs of eight field goals, three three-pointers and six rebounds and also had six assists while playing all 40 minutes. He scored eight points in the final 1:05 to pull the Owls within two points before time ran out.
He followed that up with a game-high 22 points against St. Edward’s, while tying career-highs of six rebounds and six assists. He also added four steals and two blocks. He was 7-of-11 from the field in the game, including 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. The Chesapeake, Va., native is third in Conference USA with 18.2 points per game, which ranks fourth in the country among freshmen.
It is Evans’ second career award. FIU’s Adrian Diaz was named Player of the Week.
