Andrew Drone tallied 14 points and a career-high nine rebounds to lead Rice University men's basketball past St. Edward's, 54-49, on Saturday night at Tudor Fieldhouse. The sophomore shot 5-of-7 from the field in the second half and 7-of-11 on the night.


— Rice begins a two-game homestand this Saturday, Dec. 5, when it hosts St. Edward’s. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.

The teams will meet for the second straight year and just the fourth time overall. The Owls have won the previous three meetings, which were all played in Houston.

Rice enters the game with a 2-6 record. The Owls are looking to snap a two-game losing streak after falling at Houston Baptist on Wednesday, 77-73.

Redshirt sophomore Egor Koulechov is second in Conference USA in scoring, averaging 19.0 points. He also leads the team with 6.3 rebounds. Koulechov leads the league with 3.0 three-pointers per game and is fifth in free throw percentage (.867). Freshman Marcus Evans, the reigning C-USA Co-Freshman of the Week, is third in Conference USA in points, averaging 17.8 per game. He is also fifth in steals (1.8) and tied for fourth in minutes played (32.6).

Freshman Marquez Letcher-Ellis is third on the team with 8.9 points while grabbing 3.9 rebounds. He is connecting on 51.1% from the field. Senior Max Guercy is averaging 7.3 points while leading the league with 6.1 assists per game.

Rice is averaging 72.4 points per game while allowing 83.8. The Owls are connecting on just 42.1% from the field and 29.8% from the three-point line while allowing 49.1% from the field and 41.9% from beyond the arc. Rice is also third in the conference in free throw percentage, connecting on 72.1% from the charity stripe.

St. Edward’s enters the game with a 7-1 record. The Huskies are on a three-game winning streak after defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville, 90-73.

SEU is led by senior guard Frankie Mgbolu with 11.0 points. He is also fourth in the Heartland Conference in steals (2.4) and fifth in field goal percentage (.642). Junior guards Ramir Burton and John Gramlich are averaging 13.6 and 12.6 points, respectively. Senior forward Quinton Lilly is scoring 9.5 points per game and is seventh in the Heartland with 6.3 rebounds.

St. Edward’s is averaging 81.9 points per game while allowing 71.8. The Hilltoppers are connecting on 48.4% from the floor and 34.3% from three while allowing 42.3% from the field and 37.8% from three.

Andre Cook is in his seventh season at the helm of the St. Edward’s basketball program, where he has an 89-86 (.509) record. In 12 years as a head coach, Cook is 208-126 (.623).
