Forward averaged a double-double in two games

Sean Obi was honored for his two solid performances on the week as he earned his first Conference USA Freshman of the Week award, the league office announced on Monday. He was joined by UAB’s Chad Frazier, who won Player of the Week.
On the week, Obi averaged 12.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.0 blocks. He shot 62.5 percent from the field as well.
In last Wednesday’s 63-61 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Obi paced the team with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Both marks were season highs. With the game tied and 2:14 remaining, it was an Obi basket that put Rice ahead for good. The Islanders cut the Owls’ lead to two points on a free throw with 0.4 seconds on the clock, and it was Obi who boxed out his man to draw an over-the-back foul on an intentionally missed shot to secure the win.
The Kaduna, Nigeria native sank 7-of-9 attempts from the field in the win, and added an assist and a steal on the night.
On Saturday against Princeton, Obi led the team with nine rebounds and tied for the lead with nine points. He also swatted both of Rice’s blocked shots, while shooting 3-of-7 from the field and 3-of-5 from the foul line.
Obi leads C-USA with a 71.0 field goal percentage on the season and stands eighth in the league with 8.6 rebounds per game. He has led Rice in rebounding in each of the team’s five games on the season. He follows in the footsteps of teammate Max Guercy, who won the weekly award a league-high five times last season.
Rice heads west this week for the Cable Car Classic in Santa Clara, Calif. The Owls face Rider in the opening round on Friday and play either North Dakota State or host Santa Clara on Saturday.
