Owls Fall In Overtime At Lamar
It took more than the allotted 40 minutes to determine the outcome as Rice University men's basketball fell to Lamar, 79-72, in overtime on Monday night at the Montagne Center.

Rice and Lamar will meet for the second straight year and 29th time overall. The Owls lead the series 17-11, but Lamar has won five of the last six meetings. In Houston, Rice leads 12-4. Last year, the Owls fell in overtime, 79-72, in Beaumont.

Rice looking for its first win of the season, as it enters today's game with a 0-4 record. The Owls are coming off an 82-65 defeat to Fresno State on Sunday.

Freshman Marcus Evans is second in Conference USA in scoring, averaging 18.8 points. He is also sixth in minutes played (34.2). Redshirt sophomore Egor Koulechov is seventh in the league in scoring, averaging 17.5 points per game. He also leads the team in rebounding with 7.0 points and is tied for third in the league with 3.0 three-pointers made per game.

Freshman Marquez Letcher-Ellis is third on the team with 7.3 points. Senior Max Guercy is averaging 5.0 points. He is also second in the league in assists (5.3) and second on the team in rebounds (3.5).

Rice is averaging 63.2 points per game while allowing 84.0. The Owls are connecting on just 38.2% from the field and 29.5% from the three-point line while allowing 51.7% from the field and 45.6% from beyond the arc.

Lamar enters the game with a 2-1 record. The Cardinals are coming off a 77-66 victory at Delaware State.

The Cardinals are led by freshman guard Nick Garth with 13.7 points. He is also fifth in the Southland with 2.7 three-pointers per game. Junior guard Lincoln Davis is second on the team with 13.3 points and second in the league with 5.0 assists per game. Sophomore guard Kevin Booze is averaging 10.7 points and is seventh in the conference in assists (4.0).

Lamar leads the SLC in both scoring offense and scoring defense, averaging 83.3 points per game while allowing 68.0. The Cardinals are connecting on 43.2% from the floor and 31.9% from three while leading the Southland in both field goal percentage defense (32.5%) and three-point field goal percentage defense (22.0%). LU leads the SLC in rebounding, grabbing 50.7 boards per game while allowing 42.7.

Tic Price is in his second season at the helm of the Lamar basketball program, where he has an 18-19 (.486) record. Price is 185-141 (.567) in 11 years as a head coach.
