IRVING, Texas – Rice University men’s basketball’s Bishop Mency was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week after averaging 12.0 points in two games last week, the league office announced on Monday. Charlotte’s Mike Thorn was named the league’s Player of the Week.
The Chino Hills, Calif. native averaged 12.0 points on the week as he reached double figures for the second and third time on the season. In helping the Owls to a home opener win over Prairie View A&M, he sank 4-of-8 field goals with a pair of three-pointers. He hauled in six rebounds as well in 28 minutes off the bench.
After scoring 11 points in each of his first two career games, Mency came off the bench to score 13 against William & Mary, including one of his three treys during Rice’s late comeback bid. He was 3-of-5 from deep in the game and added three boards, two steals and an assist in 28 minutes. For the week, Mency shot 57.1 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from downtown.
On the season, Mency ranks third on the team with 11.7 points per game on 50.0 percent shooting and 7-of-15 three-pointers. He adds 4.3 rebounds per game in 24.3 minutes of action off the bench.
Rice closes out the month at the GCI Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage. The tournament opens against Mercer on Thursday, Nov. 27 at 8:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
