Koulechov scored a game-high 23 points to lead Rice to a 94-70 victory in its season-opener at James Madison. Koulechov connected on 8-of-13 from the field and 4-of-7 from three. He also had three rebounds and two steals in 34 minutes. In the second half, the Volgograd, Russia native connected on three threes to help turn a four-point lead into a 24-point victory. The 23 points gave Koulechov his eighth career 20-point game.
The victory was the first season-opening road win since 1999 and the largest Road win since defeating UTEP in 2002.
This is Koulechov’s first career award and Rice’s first Player of the Week since Seth Gearhart won it Feb. 16, 2015.
