HOUSTON, Texas - Fans have their first chance to see Rice University men's basketball in action under first year head coach Mike Rhoades as the Owls host an exhibition against LeTourneau University on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The event is free and includes open seating. Additionally, there is no charge for parking at the exhibition. Fans may park in any open spaces in West Lot 4. Firehouse Subs concessions will be open for fans to enjoy during the exhibition.
Rhoades welcomes back seven contributors from last season's team. The Owls also feature eight new players, including six in the freshman class. Among the three returning starters, senior forward Seth Gearhart is the team's top returning rebounder and shot-blocker heading into his senior campaign.
Junior guard Max Guercy has started all 61 games in his career and finished up 2013-14 among the Conference USA leaders in free throw shooting, assists and assist-to-turnover ratio. He averaged 9.3 points per game as a sophomore. Sophomore guard Marcus Jackson also returns in the Owls' backcourt following a solid rookie campaign in which he led the team as well as all C-USA freshmen in steals. He paced the squad in assists in 11 games and ranked ninth in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio.
Located in Longview, Texas, LeTourneau competes in the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference. The team is led by a first-year head coach of its own in Dan Miller, who spent the previous nine seasons as head coach at Seven Lakes High School in Katy, Texas.
The young team features one senior and 11 freshmen, including 14 players from the Lone Star State and six from the Houston area. The YellowJackets look to replace all-conference performers Ladaria Brown and Justin Jones, who combined to score nearly 30 of the team's 64.0 points per game a season ago.
Rice's Homecoming football game kicks off Saturday at 11 a.m. against UTSA as the Owls seek a sixth-straight win on the gridiron.
The men's basketball squad officially opens the season on Nov. 14 at Oregon State. Rice's regular season home opener is slated for Nov. 19 against Prairie View A&M.
