RiceOwls.com sat down with this year's Men's Basketball Freshman class for a Q&A. The third installment features guard Addison Owen.
What process did you go through to choose a school?
“As a walk-on, I looked at schools at different levels. I considered taking the Division III route and looked at a few Division II schools as well. But, I felt like Rice was just a perfect fit just because it’s such a great academic school. I have a great relationship with the coaching staff here. It just felt like home when I visited. I’m really happy with my decision.”
You’ve been able to practice with the team for a bit. What has been the biggest difference in the college game from high school for you?
“The pace is very different. It’s a much faster game at this level. But, I’m definitely starting to adjust and get used to it.”
How have you been able to adjust to the college in general?
“The transition hasn’t been too hard. Academically, you obviously have to study a fair amount and get my work done. But, I feel like I’m pretty good at managing my time. So the transition hasn’t been all that difficult for me.”
What basketball player do you try to model your game after?
“I wouldn’t say that there is one player that I try to model my game after. I try to take aspects from different player’s games that I admire.”
You are one of seven freshmen on the team. Is it easier going through the transition knowing there are six other guys going through the same thing?
“Absolutely. Especially through the summer with everything we went through together. We became a tight-knit group. Everybody is going through the same struggles together and that makes it easier.”
Has there been a returning player that has helped you out?
“Definitely Marcus Jackson. He’s been a role model to me. He’s helped me through this entire process of getting used to Rice basketball-wise, school-wise and socially.”
What’s the best advice you have ever received?
“Growing up, my dad always told me ‘If you fall down eight times, get up nine.”
What are you listening to before a game?
What is your favorite movie?
What is your favorite TV show?
What is your favorite food?
