Marcus Evans Named to Preseason All-Conference Team

HOUSTON -- Sophomore Marcus Evans picked up his third preseason honor, as he was named Preseason All-Conference USA, the conference office announced Thursday afternoon.

Last week, Evans was named the College Sports Madness Preseason Player of the Year and to the All-High Major Team.

The Chesapeake, Va., native was the Conference USA Freshman of the Year last year, as well as First Team All-Conference and All-Defensive Team.

Evans was second in the league in scoring, averaging 21.4 points per game, which also led all freshmen nationally. He also led C-USA in steals (2.2 spg). His 685 points set a new school freshman record, is third on Rice's single-season scoring list and is the second-most in C-USA freshman history.

Evans also averaged 4.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He is third on the school single-season steals (69) and free throws (187) lists. His 21.4 points per game also set a C-USA freshman record.

Rice was picked to finish ninth in a poll of the conference coaches. UAB was picked to win the league, followed by Middle Tennessee, WKU, Marshall and Old Dominion.

Rice opens the season November 5 when it hosts Our Lady of the Lake in an exhibition game. The regular season begins November 13 at James Madison. The Conference USA Tournament will take place Mar. 8-11 in Birmingham, Ala. It is the third consecutive year that UAB will host the tournament.
