Rice Earns C-USA Institutional Excellence Award

IRVING, Texas – Rice University student-athletes combined for an annual grade point average of 3.290, giving the Owls their 10th Conference USA Institutional Excellence Award over the past 12 years.

The Institutional Excellence Award is given to the C-USA institution with the highest grade point average during the 2016-17 academic year for all student-athletes in conference-sponsored sports.

In addition to the overall award, Rice baseball (3.30), women’s cross country (3.78), football (2.91), soccer (3.68), women’s tennis (3.84), men’s track & field (3.37), women’s track & field (3.57) and volleyball (3.68) won their respective Sport Academic Award for posting the highest team grade point averages in the conference in 2016-17.

The eight Sport Academic Awards were the most in C-USA, followed by Florida Atlantic and Middle Tennessee with two apiece. For a second straight year Rice women’s tennis (3.84 GPA) posted the highest GPA among all qualifying C-USA teams.

Rice men’s track and field earned their 10th Sports Academic Award in the last 12 years while men’s basketball, football and women’s track and field won their ninth overall. For men’s basketball, it was their eighth consecutive earned Sports Academic Award.
