HOUSTON — 17 home games highlight the 2016-17 Rice Men’s Basketball schedule, announced Wednesday afternoon by Rice Head Coach Mike Rhoades.
For the third straight year, Rice will open the season on the road, traveling to James Madison on Nov. 13. It will be the first-ever meeting between the schools.
The Owls will play the first of 12 games against teams that reached postseason play last year when they open the home slate against defending SWAC regular season champion Texas Southern on Nov. 16. It will be just the fourth meeting between the schools and the first since 2005 with Rice winning the previous three.
Rice will play back-to-back home games against first-time opponents during Thanksgiving week. The Owls will host Montana State on Nov. 21 and Delaware State two days later.
The Owls then head to San Antonio to face Incarnate Word (Nov. 26) before closing November by hosting crosstown foe Houston Baptist on Nov. 30.
Rice begins December by traveling to in-state foe Texas Tech on Dec. 3. It will be the 92nd meeting between the schools but the first since the Southwest Conference disbanded in 1996.
Rice then hosts defending Southland Conference champion and NCAA round-of-32 participant Stephen F. Austin on Dec. 10. It will be the 18th meeting between the schools and the first since 2001. The Owls will host St. Edwards (TX) on Dec. 15.
Two days later, Rice will travel to ACC opponent Pittsburgh. It will be the just the 17th game in Rice history against an ACC foe and the first since facing Georgia Tech in the 2012 DirecTV Classic.
Northwestern State visits Tudor Fieldhouse on Dec. 19 for the sixth time and the first since 1999. Rice has won the previous five meetings with the Demons. Two days later, Rice closes its non-conference slate when it hosts St. Thomas.
Rice is also scheduled to play UT Arlington as part of its non-conference slate. Exact details of the game are pending.
Rice opens the conference schedule on the road for the second straight year, traveling to Old Dominion on Dec. 31. This will be the first time since 2004-05 that the Owls open the conference slate in December. Last year, the Owls defeated ODU in Norfolk, 75-66. Rice then begins 2017 at Charlotte on Jan. 2.
The Owls open their conference home schedule against a pair of Conference USA 2015-16 champions. They host C-USA champion Middle Tennessee on Jan. 5 and C-USA regular season champion UAB on Jan. 7 in the only meetings of the year against both teams.
A week later (Jan. 14), Rice welcomes North Texas to Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls then travel to Louisiana Tech (Jan. 19) before closing the trip at Southern Miss on Jan. 21.
Rice faces Old Dominion for the second time on Jan. 26. Two days later, the Owls close January when they host Charlotte.
Rice begins February with a three-game road trip, beginning Feb. 4 at North Texas. It will then head to Florida to face FIU (Feb. 9) and Florida Atlantic (Feb. 11).
The Owls begin a four-game homestand on Feb. 16 against UTSA. Two days later, the Owls will face UTEP. Both matchups will be the only ones of the season against the Roadrunners and Miners. Rice plays Southern Miss for the second time on Feb. 23 before closing its home schedule on the 25th against Louisiana Tech.
Rice will take to the road for the final time when it travels to Huntington, W.V., to face Marshall on Mar. 2. The Owls close the season on Mar. 4 against WKU in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Conference USA Tournament will be held Mar. 8-12 and will be hosted by UAB for the third consecutive year.
