HOUSTON -- 15 home games highlight the 2017-18 Rice Men's Basketball schedule, announced Wednesday afternoon by Rice Head Coach Scott Pera.
Rice will open the season at home for the first time since 2013-14 when they host Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 10 in the first of two straight home games. The Owls will then host Georgia State on Nov. 14 in the first of seven games this year against teams that reached postseason play last year. It will be the first-ever meeting against both schools.
Rice follows that up with four of the next five games away from Tudor Fieldhouse, beginning with a Nov. 17 game at Northwestern State. The Owls are a perfect 6-0 all-time against the Demons, including a 100-93 victory at home last year.
The Owls then head to Las Vegas for the MGM Grand Main Event, Nov. 20-22. Rice opens up against former Western Athletic Conference UNLV before facing either Mississippi or Utah.
After returning home to face St. Thomas on Nov. 25, Rice heads to Sun Belt Conference regular season champion UT-Arlington for the first time since 1979 when it faces the Mavericks on Nov. 29.
Rice begins December by hosting UTRGV on Dec. 2. A week later (Dec. 9), the Owls travel to Nacogdoches to face Stephen F. Austin. Rice then hosts St. Edward's in its annual Kid's Day game on Dec. 14.
Rice then begins a stretch of four of the next five games on the road, beginning with a trip to Lubbock for the second straight year to play former Southwest Conference foe Texas Tech on Dec. 16. Last year, the Owls lost a heartbreaker, 85-84, when the Red Raiders hit three free throws with 2.4 seconds left.
Three days later, Rice travels to Albuquerque, N.M., to face New Mexico. The Owls close its non-conference slate on Dec. 22 when it hosts Texas State. Rice has won the last five meetings against the Bobcats dating back to 1981.
For the third straight year, Rice will open its conference schedule on the road, traveling to UTSA on Dec. 28. This will be the second straight year that the Owls open the conference slate in December. Rice then takes to El Paso to face UTEP on Dec. 30.
The Owls begin 2018 with three straight home games, beginning with Old Dominion on Jan. 4 and Charlotte on Jan. 6 in the only meetings of the year against both teams.
A week later (Jan. 13), Rice welcomes North Texas to Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls then travel to Southern Miss (Jan. 18) before closing the trip at Louisiana Tech on Jan. 20.
Rice then hosts FIU (Jan. 25) and Florida Atlantic (Jan. 27) in the first of two games against each opponent.
Rice begins February with a three-game road trip, beginning Feb. 3 at North Texas. It will then head to reigning Conference USA champion Middle Tennessee (Feb. 8) and UAB (Feb. 10).
The Owls return home for a pair of games when they host Marshall (Feb. 15) and WKU (Feb. 17). Both games will be the only meetings against each opponent. Rice then travels to Florida for the second of two games each against Florida Atlantic (Feb. 22) and FIU (Feb. 24).
Rice will then host UTEP on Mar. 1 before closing the regular season against UTSA on Mar. 3.
The Conference USA Tournament will be held Mar. 7-10 at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco. North Texas will host the tournament for the first time.
