HOUSTON, Texas — Rice head basketball coach Scott Pera announced Tuesday morning that Van Green has been promoted to Assistant Coach. Green, who served as the Video Coordinator last year, takes over for Omar Mance, who became the Head Coach at Trevecca Nazarene.
“I am excited to announce the promotion of Van Green to Assistant Coach,” said Pera. “I had the opportunity to coach Van in his final season of eligibility at Rice and when I was named head coach I reached out to him to let him know that I wanted him to be a part of my staff. In his role as Video Coordinator, Van demonstrated all the qualities necessary in becoming a successful coach at the collegiate level. He is a tireless worker, great with people and is respected by everyone in the athletic department. He will add value on the court, in recruiting and during games as we continue to take steps in moving the program forward. Please join me in congratulating Van on his new role.”
Green came to Rice as a graduate transfer for the 2014-15 season, playing all 32 games and averaging 3.0 points and 2.2 rebounds while being a recipient of the Conference USA Academic Medal and C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll. He then served as a graduate assistant with the men’s basketball team during the 2015-16 season.
Green began his playing career at Columbia, playing in 37 games over the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons before missing his final two seasons due to injury.
“It is my utmost honor and privilege to serve the Rice basketball family as an assistant coach,” said Green. “I am grateful to Coach Pera for the confidence he has placed in me and for the opportunity he’s provided me to grow as a coach, mentor and leader. During my time as a student-athlete, graduate assistant and video coordinator, Rice basketball has been instrumental in my personal and professional development and I look forward to helping our players reach their highest potential on and off the court. We’re building a special and contagious culture here at Rice, one that is rooted in toughness, passion, humility and unity and I feel blessed to have a hand in its continuation. It is a great day to be an Owl.”
