HOUSTON — The Rice men’s basketball team will begin the 2018-19 season early when it takes an eight day trip to Spain in August, head coach Scott Pera announced. The Owls will depart Houston on August 2 before returning to South Main on August 10.
Per NCAA rules regarding a foreign tour, Rice will hold 10 days of practices prior to departing Houston.
“The Rice men’s basketball program is excited to announce we will be taking a foreign trip this summer to Spain. We will be visiting three beautiful cities and playing a game against top competition in each one. I think this is a great opportunity to continue to build our program on and off the court. We will be able to experience some diverse cultures and spend time seeing some breathtaking cities. The basketball part of it will provide an opportunity for our freshmen class to bond with our returning players in the pre-trip practices that the NCAA allow as well as the chance to spend quality time together traveling and while in Spain. We cannot wait to get the freshmen on campus and begin to build for what we feel will be a huge step in getting Rice basketball back to a respectful and sustainable position in Conference USA and beyond.”
Rice will begin the trip in Madrid, spending two days in Spain’s capital city where it will experience a tour of the city before playing one game against a local team. It will then travel to Valencia, located on the Mediterranean Sea. The Owls will spend two days in Valencia, playing its second game of the trip against a local team.
Rice will spend its final three days in Barcelona where it will play its final game of the trip.
