Former Rice Assistant Coach to Lead Pioneers
May 29, 2013
HOUSTON, Texas – Rice University men’s basketball assistant coach Gus Argenal has accepted the position of head coach at Cal State East Bay in Hayward, Calif., the program announced on Wednesday.
Rice head coach Ben Braun said, “I want to acknowledge Gus for his contributions to our program over the past year. I’m very supportive of him as he moves on to a college head coaching position. I’ve known him throughout his playing and coaching days and wish him the best in his new position in his hometown.”
Argenal joined the Owls in June 2012 after spending the previous four years coaching in Northern California. Prior to returning to his alma mater, UC Davis, he spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Chico State.
At Rice, Argenal worked to develop the Owls’ perimeter players, including senior Tamir Jackson, who finished his career near the top of the Rice record books in several categories, and Max Guercy, who won Conference USA Freshman of the Week honors five times en route to being named a freshman all-conference selection.
Argenal succeeds Will Biggs, who led the Pioneers to 223 wins in 16 seasons.
