Rice got down early and could not catch up, falling 80-54, to San Francisco Monday night at War Memorial Gymnasium.


HOUSTON — Rice will host San Francisco in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational presented by Five Four, this Wednesday, Mar. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will live-streamed by CUSA.tv.

Postseason Notes
• Rice will be making its 12th appearance in postseason play and its first since the 2011-12 season.
• Rice has made four NCAA appearances, five NIT appearances and one CIT appearance.
• This is the Owls first-ever appearance in the College Basketball Invitational.
• Rice is 5-12 all-time in postseason play. Rice is 1-0 at home, 2-6 on the road and 2-5 on a neutral court.
• The Owls will be playing just its second postseason home game.

Scouting Rice
• Rice enters the College Basketball Invitational with a 22-11 record. The Owls have won nine of their last 11 games after defeating Southern Miss in the first round, 86-75, on Wednesday.
• Sophomore guard Marcus Evans is third in the conference in scoring, averaging 19.1 points per game. He is also third in three-point field goals made per game (2.5) and seventh in assists (3.8).
• Redshirt junior guard/forward Egor Koulechov is averaging 18.2 points, good for fifth-place in C-USA. He leads the league in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 46.9% from beyond the arc. The Volgograd, Russia native is also fourth in the league in rebounding (8.9) and free throw percentage (.809) and seventh in three-point field goals made per game (2.3) and minutes played (34.4).
• Redshirt junior guard Marcus Jackson is averaging 12.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.4 rebounds and sophomore guard Connor Cashaw is averaging 7.8 points and is second on the team with 5.3 rebounds.
• The Owls are second in Conference USA in scoring, averaging 81.7 points per game while allowing 75.1.
• Rice is connecting on 46.0% from the floor while leading the league in three-point field goal percentage (38.9%). It is allowing 44.0% from the floor and 33.4% from three.
• Rice is outrebounding its opponents by an average of 3.8 boards per game, 38.1-to-34.4.
• The Owls are also second in the league with 9.4 three-pointers made per game.
• Head coach Mike Rhoades is in his third season at the helm of the Rice basketball program. He owns a 46-51 (.474) record on South Main and a 243-127 (.657) record in 12 years as a head coach.

Scouting San Francisco
• San Francisco enters the College Basketball Invitational with a 20-12 record. The Dons were 10-8 in the West Coast Conference and are coming off a 76-69 defeat to Santa Clara in the quarterfinals of the West Coast Conference Championship on Mar. 4.
• Senior guard Ronnie Boyce earned second team All-WCC. He led the team with 13.4 points while grabbing 4.1 rebounds.
• Junior forward is second on the team in scoring with 10.0 points per game. He is also eighth in the WCC in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 41.2% from behind the arc.
• Freshman guard Charles Minlend was named to the West Coast Conference All-Freshman Team, averaging 10.0 points per game.
• San Francisco is scoring 71.4 points per game while allowing 66.8.
• The Dons are connecting on 45.3% from the field and 35.7% from three while allowing 41.9% from the floor and 33.2% from three.
• USF is pulling down 35.8 rebounds per game and giving up 35.1.
• San Francisco is second in the WCC with 9.1 three-pointers made per game.
• Head coach Kyle Smith is in his first season at the helm of the San Francisco men’s basketball program where he owns a 20-12 (.625) record. In seven years as a head coach, he is 121-94 (.563).

Series History
• Rice and San Francisco will meet for the second straight year but just the fourth time overall.
• USF holds a 2-1 lead in the series.
• Last year, the Dons won, 80-54, in San Francisco.
• This will be the first meeting between the teams in Houston.
• Head coach Mike Rhoades is 0-1 all-time against San Francisco.

Next Up
• With a victory, Rice will face the winner of Georgia Southern and Utah Valley on Monday, Mar. 20. Time and place are still to be determined.
