Just hours ahead of the Owls' Conference USA Basketball Championship quarterfinal game against Tulsa, Rice sophomore forward Arsalan Kazemi received more postseason recognition as he was named to the United States Basketball Writers Association's All-District VII team on Thursday.
Less than 24 hours earlier, Kazemi scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Owls defeated SMU 58-57 to advance to tonight's game against Tulsa. Tip-off is slated for 9 p.m. Central and the game will be broadcast nationally on the CBS College Sports Network.
The USBWA's 10-member, All-District VII team consists of student-athletes from the states of Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. The USBWA also named Texas' Jordan Hamilton its district player of the year while UT's Rick Barnes was selected the district's coach of the year in a vote conducted by writers from the district.
Earlier this year, the USBWA announced it would honor Kazemi with its Most Courageous Award during its April 1st Breakfast of Celebration set to take place in the George R. Brown Convention Center in conjunction with festivities surrounding the NCAA Final Four®.
Through Wednesday's first-round game against SMU, Kazemi is now averaging 15.3 points and 11.2 rebounds. He has 18 double-doubles for the season and 27 for his career.
Heading into Thursday's game against the Golden Hurricane, Kazemi needs just 16 rebounds to equal the Rice season record set by Michael Harris during the 2004-05 season (363).
