Evans Named First Team All-Conference USA

HOUSTON, Texas — Freshman Marcus Evans was named First Team All-Conference USA, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.

Evans becomes the first freshman in Rice history to be named First Team All-Conference and just the second Owl to be named First Team All-Conference USA, joining Morris Almond who earned the honors in 2006 and 2007. He also becomes the ninth freshman in Conference USA history to earn the distinction.

Evans is the nation’s leading freshman scorer and is second overall in Conference USA with 21.2 points per game. He leads the league in steals (2.1) and is ninth in minutes played (33.4). He has set the Rice freshman record for points (658), 20-point games (19), field goals made (212), field goals attempted (456), free throws made (182), free throws attempted (229) and steals (66).

The Chesapeake, Va., native has led Rice in scoring 21 times, assists seven times and rebounding four times. He is the third leading freshman scorer in Conference USA history and is third in school single-season history.

Evans has been named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week a record nine times, including the last five weeks.

Evans leads the Owls into this week’s Conference USA Tournament. Rice takes on Charlotte at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, in Birmingham, Ala.
